Shouldn't my lab just know how to retrieve?

Labs, by instinct, love to carry things in their mouths. You have to get them excited about retrieving and show them how!

How do I train my lab to retrieve?

From a casual family pet perspective, we have found that the follwoing works:

1) Select their favourite toy that they already LOVE
2) Throw the toy
3) Have treat in pocket
4) Tell them to "Get it" or another command
5) When they pick up the toy praise them
6) Say "Bring it here" or another command
7) If they start to come towards you jump and cheer
8) If they come right over to you, pet and offer a treat
9) When they let go say "Drop it" or "Give it" and praise with treat
10) Repeat for 5-10 minutes a day until they learn

How long does this take? My lab doesn't get it!

It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 months! Don't get frustrated. Keep it fun for your pup. They will learn, don't worry!
